Caribbean Tourism and Health Sectors Continue Successful Collaboration: New Crisis Communications Tools Launched
The Caribbean region is advancing its commitment to tourism resilience with the launch of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering health and safety measures across the tourism sector. Amid ongoing challenges posed by health pandemics and natural disasters, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), in partnership with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), has introduced the "Regional Tourism Health Capacity Enhancement and Digitization Project: Advancing Caribbean Travelers’ Health".
Funded and supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), this initiative marks a significant milestone in regional collaboration. A key outcome of the project is the introduction of a comprehensive Health and Tourism Crisis Communications Toolkit. This toolkit includes tailored communication strategies and social media plans designed to foster Healthier Safer Tourism practices throughout the Caribbean. It aims to equip tourism stakeholders with essential resources to navigate public health threats and enhance crisis preparedness.
During a recent webinar, participants engaged with experts from the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology & Hydrology to discuss insights into the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, emphasizing proactive measures for mitigating risks. The toolkit, structured into five components, encompasses preparedness guidelines, promotional materials for engaging travelers, and media relations resources to streamline crisis communication efforts.
Reflecting on the initiative, Dona Regis-Prosper, Secretary-General and CEO of CTO, highlighted its timely relevance amidst the current hurricane season. "Collaboration and effective communication with our stakeholders are critical in mitigating the impacts of global climate challenges," she remarked.
Dr. Lisa Indar, Ad Interim Executive Director of CARPHA, underscored the toolkit's role in fostering not only safer tourism but also healthier populations, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters where communicable diseases pose heightened risks. She emphasized the toolkit's capacity to fortify health defenses for both residents and visitors alike.
Vanessa Ledesma, Acting CEO and Director General of CHTA, reinforced the commitment to resilience-building efforts, affirming the rollout of new tools and training modules aimed at bolstering preparedness across the region.
The project's broader scope includes initiatives like "The Technology Enhancement and Digitalization of Regional Visitor Information Management Systems" and comprehensive capacity development through online training courses. These efforts underscore a collective commitment to sustainable tourism practices and resilient infrastructure in the Caribbean.
