Some Taiwanese media reports say the activities by China's aircraft carrier may be a response to the recent phone talks between US President-elect Donald Trump and Taiwan's president, Tsai Ing-wen.

Defense officials in Taiwan say they are closely monitoring the movements of a Chinese aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, in the western Pacific Ocean.

They say they will check if the carrier returns to China via the Bashi Channel, which lies between southern Taiwan and the Philippines.
