Son of bilingual secretary Elsa Aguilar Bolaños-Cacho and painter, cartoonist and illustrator Francisco Gómez Linares, Roberto was the second of three brothers (Francis and Horace were the other two). Before becoming an actor, was novice boxer; also earned a degree in architecture at UNAM, but never practiced.
On November 19, 2004 he married Florinda Meza (Doña Florinda who played in the Chavo del Ocho), after a long relationship. Gómez Bolaños married in the first instance with Graciela Fernández, who bore him six children.
He began his career as an advertising creative, which connected him with radio and television, which was, during the 1950s, an active writer.
