The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, today dissolved the Fifteenth Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, a formal ceremony for the arrival to power of the new lower house of parliament recently elected by the voters.
"The president accepted the advice of the cabinet and today signed an order dissolving the fifteenth Lok Sabha in exercise of its powers conferred by sub-clause (b) of clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution," he told the media press secretary of the presidential palace Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, also resigned on Saturday. His Union Cabinet had advised the president to dissolve before the fifteenth Lok Sabha with immediate effect. The Electoral Commission shall forward the list of newly elected President XV Lok Sabha, which contains the name of all 543 MPs.
The Bharatiya Janata Party won a landslide victory in the general election after winning a majority of 282 seats, while the Hindu Congress suffered its worst defeat with only 44 seats.
