13,000 kilometers long, the super-speed train from Beijing to Washington would pass Russia and Canada with a tunnel under the Bering Strait
China is considering building a line of high-speed train that would link Beijing to Washington via Russia and Canada, informed the official Chinese press.
The proposed line would begin in northeastern China and would run through Siberia, would pass through a tunnel under the Pacific Ocean and then come to Alaska and Canada to reach the United States, according to a report in the state newspaper Beijing Times.
The underwater tunnel between Alaska and Russia by the Bering Strait would be 200 kilometers (four times the tunnel English Channel), according to Wang Mengshu, railway expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering was quoted by the official media in Beijing.
"We are in discussions. Russia has been thinking about this for many years, "explained Wang
The project, which has been called "The China-Russia line over America"-would have 13,000 miles, about 3,000 miles more than the Trans-Siberian Railway.
The entire trip would take two days, with the train traveling at an average speed of 350 miles per hour.
The South China Morning Post reports that "the reported plans leave room for skepticism" because "no other Chinese railway experts that have come out in support of the project."
For the South China Morning Post, is it clear that the government of Beijing has talked with Russia, the United States or Canada. Just the way of the Bering Strait would require unprecedented feat of engineering. According to the government newspaper China Daily, the technology for the tunnel "already exists" and will be used to build a high-speed train between the southeastern province of Fujian and Taiwan, in a project funded and built by China.
