United States applied economic sanctions against Russia

Among the objectives of the new sanctions will export high-tech products for the Russian defense industry

U.S. President Barack Obama said the United States will apply new sanctions against Russian companies and individuals in retaliation for the alleged provocations in Ukraine.

Obama said that the objectives of the new sanctions are the exports of high technology products for the Russian defense industry. The full list of objectives will be announced by officials in Washington and is expected to include wealthy individuals close to Putin, the Russian president.

"The goal is not Mr. Putin," Obama said. "The goal is to modify its calculations regarding the measures they are taking and how they could have an adverse effect on the Russian economy in the long term."

Obama announced sanctions during a press conference in the Philippines, the last leg of his four-nation tour of Asia.

White House officials said last week decided to impose new sanctions after it was concluded that Russia had not respected the commitments of a fragile diplomatic agreement that was intended to alleviate the crisis in Ukraine.
