It has completed the construction of 14 evacuation towers against seismic waves on the coast of Nankoku, a city of Kochi prefecture, in western Japan.

The towers will be used in the event of a massive earthquake in the Nankai Trough, in the Pacific Ocean, which could generate seismic waves capable of reaching the city in 20 minutes or occurs.

Last July, the city began to build towers at intervals of 600 meters in order to allow residents to get to the nearest walk for about 5 minutes.

On Sunday, about 50 people, including city officials and residents attended a ceremony at the district Maehama to commemorate the completion of the works. Residents climbed a tower to explore its inner structure.

Representatives of the municipality said the 14 concrete towers have two floors high and equipped with stairs, ramps, and alarm bells. They can accommodate a total of approximately 4,500 evacuees.
